Jazz education – the key that keeps the music playing
The Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society Foundation is a major force in local jazz education programs that foster the preservation and enjoyment of “Trad Jazz.” In partnership with the San Juan Unified School District, the foundation helps provide jazz lessons starting in grade school and continuing through high school. Here are the highlights:
- District-wide – The Traditional Jazz Project (TJP) has conducted improvisation and jazz camps for the San Juan district’s music faculty, helped launch student jazz bands and supported ongoing classes and workshops.
- Elementary – Mission Avenue Open Elementary Band Director Mica Dugan, a graduate of the TJP, not only teaches jazz to youngsters but also organized two elementary jazz bands.
- Middle – Churchill Middle School this year is creating a jazz band and a jazz club with the help of TJP. There are weekly rehearsals, occasional workshops with guest artists and free tickets to local jazz concerts.
- High School – Rio Americano High School has an extensive jazz band program with classes for students of varying abilities and experience. TJP sends out guest artists for clinics and performances with students.
